Geriatric Psychiatry has been recognized with subspecialty status at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) since 2009. Documents outlining the objectives of training, training requirements, and accreditation standards have been developed by the Specialty Committee and are posted on the Royal College website in both French and English. Applications to establish University training programs in Geriatric Psychiatry have been and continue to be received at the Royal College, and those programs gaining new accreditation (Toronto, Ottawa and BC) began training residents in July 2012. The first examination in Geriatric Psychiatry will occur on September 26, 2013. Candidates for this exam will include those residents who have undertaken the new subspecialty training, as well as physicians currently in Geriatric Psychiatry practice who wish to be considered for eligibility to write the examination via the Practice Eligibility route (PER-SUB).

Criteria to determine eligibility to write the examinations based on the PER-SUB route and the relevant documents will be available. Further information regarding the process for applications may be obtained by viewing the Royal College website.

The purpose of this lunch meeting is for University Leaders to review the PER-SUB criteria, and to ask questions of the Specialty Committee and each other, with regard to training requirements, the development of a "COPE equivalent" for Geriatric Psychiatry, coordination of applications and acceptance of candidates, examination format, or any other issues related to ongoing subspecialty development.

We recognize that not every University has an established Division or Program in Geriatric Psychiatry at this time, but feel strongly that the involvement of representatives from each University would be very helpful as we proceed with the coordination of subspecialty development. If you are unable to attend the meeting in person, please identify someone who might be able to attend. If attendance in person is not possible, written feedback is also welcome and can be forwarded to the Specialty Committee via Leya Duigu (leya@cagp.ca).
