Elder Abuse Workshop

Elder Abuse Workshop

Time: 12-1:30pm

Outline:  

1. Week One: Introduction - Basic demographics, historical overview of the development of abuse-related fields (child, woman abuse and now elder abuse), basic types of abuse, ways of detecting abuse

2. Week Two: Theories/paradigms - intergenerational transfer, caregivers stress, power and control and others.

3. Week Three: Assessment - picking up on signs discussed in the intro session we will learn to talk to a person who may be experiencing abuse.  This will include issues such as questions to ask, issues to consider (safety, location of discussions etc) and how to respond to people who may be in distress.

4. Week Four: Interventions - safety planning, counselling supports, working with perpetrators, developing places of safety for seniors, understanding the legal context of this work.

5. Week Five: Documentation practices – what to write, when to write it, how to write

6. Week Six: Ethical issues - balancing a person’s right to autonomy against a duty to provide care
 
Instructor:   Lisa Manuel, PhD Director, Changing Lives and Family Violence Programs, Family Service Toronto

Lisa Manuel has more than 20 years of experience working with seniors and caregivers. Dr. Manuel completed her Ph.D. in Sociology in 1995, focusing on how family members identify and define the dementia process and how these patterns of understanding impact on their ability to secure assistance from the formal care system. She is the author of FST’s “Breaking the Silence: Best Practices for Working with Older People Experiencing Abuse”. She was also instrumental in developing one of Ontario’s first elder abuse consultation teams and more recently lead the development of Pat’s Place – Ontario’s only safe haven for older people experiencing abuse.
This workshop will be webcast, and offered only if there is sufficient enrolment. You must register by midnight Friday January 14th in order to attend, either in person or by webcast.
