Regional Update: British Colombia
Martha L. Donnelly, MD, FRCPC,
Director, Geriatric Psychiatry Program,
UBC

The B.C. government has created a Provincial Dementia Standing Committee to support and develop a provincial action plan for dementia and to identify practice interventions. Its membership represents the whole province and a wide variety of stakeholders. We welcome dementia care improvements that this project supports.

The B.C. Ombudsmen has produced a report on a review of continuing care (nursing home) facilities in B.C. You can find the report at www.ombudsman.bc.ca. It is called “The Best of Care: Getting it Right for Seniors in British Columbia, Part I.” The report finds inadequacies in the province’s commitment to care and the rights of seniors in residential care facilities and recommends that such a commitment is set out as a priority. It also demands that each facility post the rights of the residents at the entrance of the facility and that a single provincial website for public reporting of useful information about residential care facilities be created.

Those of us supporting seniors’ care and particularly care for seniors with psychiatric problems welcome the ombudsman report and believe it can only lead to improved facility care.

There are three conferences to note relating to psychogeriatrics or overall care for seniors in 2010.

  1.  The B.C. Psychogeriatric Association meets in Naniamo Friday April 30th and Saturday May 1st. The topic is “Updates in Older Adult Mental Health: Meeting Clinical Challenges” and this keynote speaker is Dr. Marie Tourigny-Rivard.

  2. “Positive Aging” November 26th and 27th, Vancouver, B.C. For more information see www.interprofessional.ubc.ca.

  3. “Developmental Disability and Aging” November 19th and 20th, Vancouver, B.C. (This program is being finalized.)

The UBC Geriatric Psychiatry Program has one fellow, Dr. Jenny Rogers in the Vancouver Program this year, August to August and one fellow in Victoria, April to April. The UBC Department of Psychiatry strongly supports subspecialization and is actively working on securing funding two sub-specialty geriatric residents per year as of 2012.

Finally, the UBC Geriatric Psychiatry Program welcomes the six-month mandatory training in geriatrics for general psychiatrists. It also welcomes the National input for standardization of this experience and sharing of resources.

CANDRIVE – Keeping Safe Older Drivers Driving.
Mark J. Rapoport, MD, FRCPC

Dear Colleagues,

An exciting research endeavor is taking place across Canada. I’ve been a member of CanDRIVE’s research group for the last several years. CanDRIVE stands for the Canadian Driving Research Initiative for Vehicular Safety in the Elderly, and has been funded by CIHR since 2002, with the mandate of research into safe driving in the elderly. Currently, we are in the first year of a five-year longitudinal study of healthy older drivers. The aim is to produce an evidence-based decision tool that clinicians can use to determine risk in-office. The principle investigators, Shawn Marshall and Malcolm Hing, a physiatrist and geriatrician, respectively, from Ottawa, have worked with a large team of researchers across the Country to design a comprehensive investigation that incorporates detailed observation of physical and cognitive abilities as well as driving behavior. Participants are still urgently needed. We are more than half-way to our recruitment target. I’m hoping that you might consider posting the flyer (below) in waiting or general areas in your local offices or health centres.

Sincerely,

Mark Rapoport, MD, FRCPC
