03 Apr 2014 9:26 AM | CAGP (Administrator)

Dr. Jeff Myers, University of Toronto, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre

In October 2013, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada officially approved the recognition of Palliative Medicine as a formal two-year subspecialty in Canada.  This historic decision followed an eight year application process. The subspecialty training program will have multiple entry routes although Internal Medicine, Anaesthesia, Neurology and Paediatrics, which were determined as the base specialties. Physicians from other specialties, including Family Medicine, who can demonstrate the necessary prerequisite competencies, will be allowed to apply to the subspecialty training program.  Finally, there will also be a practice-eligible route open to all physicians. A Working Group is being established to oversee the implementation of the subspecialty and it is through this process further details will be clarified.

PLEASE NOTE: The CAGP cannot provide patients with the names of physicians providing care to patients. The Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons in most Canadian provinces and territories maintain a website for patients to find a physician by specialty. A list of these governing bodies is available on the Federation of Medical Regulatory Authorities of Canada’s website.
